Text Box: SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE
How long has it been since you have visited your school? I can say that our children are well represented by very caring and supportive families. That support shows in the way most of our students choose to represent Union Local and themselves. The high level of support is also evident at our many events. So, if you haven’t visited the school lately please come. Our students, teachers and administrators would love to see you. We do understand that now, probably more than at any other time in our lives, we need the interaction of positive teachers, staff, parents, administrators and students. I urge you to be an encourager.
I am so proud of the progress the District students have made recently, both academically and on the athletic front. We still have work to do but I recognize the efforts made to accomplish the little victories that no one hears about and the grand victories, both of which make us all, young and old, walk Text Box: with pride. Thank you parents, teachers, staff and students for your efforts in helping our district to continuously improve.
Finally, the district needs to economize on every front. It falls to each of us in the system to tighten the belt while focusing on placing every possible dollar into classroom instruction. I am reminded daily that our staff cares immensely about providing a quality education, even as it monitors spending at every level.
Providing superior services at an affordable cost is the foundation of public education in Union Local, where our focus is on what is best for the student, efficiency and accountability.
In closing, I am grateful for the supportive communities, great students, hard working staff and awesome parents.
Sincerely,
                    	 H. Kirk Glasgow

Text Box: DISTRICT HONORS BAND
On February 14th 2009, three of the Union Local Band members performed in a district Honors Band that included more than 70 students from other schools. The Ohio Music Educators Association District IX hosts the Honors Band for this area. Students are selected from every high school within the surrounding 8 counties. The UL high school students that were chosen include Ryan Horstman, Tess Sheppard and Chantel Sliva. These students rehearsed for eight hours on February 14th and then performed a concert for the public in the evening. Congratulations to these students for being selected for Honors Band and for representing Union Local. Great job!

ULHS Art Classes

The High School Art Department would like to report our students results for the 20th Annual Oglebay Institutes Stifel Art Center Student Exhibition held in Wheeling.

Out of the three states invited to compete in only four categories our department submitted 16 pieces in Photography, Painting and Drawing. Two of our seniors received Honorable Mentions for their work; Renee Britton for her Watercolor Painting of a sunset and Shelby Nester for her Colored Pencil rendering that were featured in the Sunday Times Leader.

Renee Britton’s work went onto the Visions and Voices High School Student Show at Pittsburgh Technical Institute which opens Saturday, February 28, 2009, and runs through March 27, 2009, in the Gallery at P T I's North Fayette Campus. Last year Renee won first place in the Fine Art category for her Old Mill picture and we hope she can have a repeat performance for this year’s work.

In our High School Art classes, we are quite busy completing our projects as well as the following contests:

The High School Art Classes have entered the Doodle for Google online contest http://www.google.com/doodle4google/index.html that will select 40 winners who be featured from August through November on their homepage. This year’s theme is “What I Wish for the World”, and we already have quite a few great designs to submit. Any student K-12 is welcome to enter so if you have a child who you feel could design for this theme they can enter and submit their own entries.

The advance Art Classes have been asked to design the 2009 Barkcamp 5K Walk/10K Trail run for the American Cancer Society/Debbie Green Memorial Race. We are trying to get a winning design that the runners/walkers will like.

All students were invited to create designs for Heinz in the www.ketchupcreativity.com  contest in which the students can receive $1,000 for entering a design for a ketchup packet. Log onto   the above address and follow the rules and submit your design for a chance to win $1,000.
